Georgieva named European of the Year

European commissioner for international co-operation, humanitarian aid and crisis response wins European Voice award.
Kristalina Georgieva was tonight named European of the Year at European Voice's annual awards ceremony. The 57-year-old former World Bank official was also voted European commissioner of the year.
The readers of European Voice voted Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank (ECB), as their EU Official of the Year. He had been nominated for preserving the ECB's reputation for independence in the face of political pressure during the eurozone's sovereign-debt crisis.
The joint winners of the category of National Politician of the Year were David Cameron and Nick Clegg, the prime minister and deputy prime minister of the United Kingdom. Their decision in May to form a coalition government had won them inclusion in a shortlist drawn up by a panel of experts for breaking with the UK's entrenched habits and adopting a more European style of government.
Jeanine Hennis-Plaaschaert was voted MEP of the Year. Even though she left the European Parliament half-way through the year to join the Dutch national parliament, the impact that she had made in February was sufficient to win the award. She had led the Parliament to reject a deal struck by the European Commission and the EU's national governments with the US government enabling the transfer of information about bank transfers made by European citizens. The agreement, which was designed to counter terrorism, was eventually revised with enhanced data-protection rules.
The winner of the category of Inspiration of the Year was Spain's national football team, which won the World Cup in July and asserted European supremacy in the world's most popular sport.
Georgieva, a former vice-president of the World Bank, was nominated for the post of European commissioner only when the Parliament threatened in January to withhold approval for the new college of commissioners because they were unhappy with Bulgaria's first choice as commissioner, Rumiana Jeleva. Georgieva was drafted in from the World Bank as a replacement, taking over the portfolio of international co-operation, humanitarian aid and crisis response. She led the European Union's response to humanitarian disasters in Haiti and Pakistan.
Tim King, the editor of European Voice, said: “Georgieva became a European commissioner almost by accident, but since February she has clearly impressed many people.
“2010 has been a difficult year for the European Union, but the awards nevertheless celebrate some significant achievements. The voting for Georgieva underlines that the EU is still a force for good in the world and a global player when it comes to humanitarian aid.
“The confidence expressed in Trichet is significant in view of the tensions that have persisted for the last eight months between the European Central Bank and some eurozone governments.
“The vote for Hennis-Plasschaert emphasises how important are the powers given by the Lisbon treaty to the European Parliament.
“David Cameron might not welcome our voters drawing attention to how the coalition agreement wrong-footed the most Europhobic of his party colleagues, but Nick Clegg could probably do with some kind of affirmation that he made the right decision.
“Most of our readers (though not the Dutch) clearly enjoyed the Spanish football team's triumph, which established Europe ahead of Latin America. However, I suspect that what matters now in Madrid is whether Spain and Portugal win the nomination for hosting the 2018 World Cup.”
The EVawards were presented during a gala dinner at the stock exchange of Brussels, attended by more than 120 leading legislators, policymakers and members of the EU community.

На 27-ми октомври от 19:00 часа, отново в Европейския Парламент ще имате възможността да присъствате на събитие на тема "Българският принос в европейското културно разнообразие", организирано от групата S&D.
В Комитета на Регионите на 28-ми октомври от 13:30 часа ще се състои събитие посветено на Кюстендилския район в присъствието на Премиера, Бойко Борисов и на кмета на Кюстендил, Петър Паунов.

Dear friends,
It is the end of August already, the year is flying by! We on the CHICHO board hope that you have had a greet summer and would like to update you on what we've been working on this year.
Ilia has just returned from Bulgaria where he has been checking on some of our current projects and donations:
The 'Baba y Vnunche' project we asked you for help with is well under way and already showing results. We have slightly less 'grannies' than initially planned but the important thing is that the project is up and running. At the moment we are sponsoring 7 instead of the 11 planned due to a lack of suitable candidates. However, one of the ladies has already changed the life of a 7 year old boy by teaching him to walk. It is clear that the children love the attention that the 'ladies in pink' can provide. We hope to recruit more soon and the running costs will drop considerably as we do.
We have also just sponsored a carer from Karin Dom in Varna (www.karindom.org) by paying for 5 day cerebral palsy Early Intervention Course in London for €844.

She will take this expertise back to Bulgaria with her and train the others at the center how to rehabilitate and provide relief to severely handicapped children.
We have also started giving 8 abandoned children, all students in the regular schools, in Gorski Senovetz €1 a day pocket money for school and other expenses they may have during the day while at school (sandwitch, coke or whatever they may need). Their names are Jivko, Itzo, Suzana, Elena, Hristofor, Ivan, Pepa and Alexander.
This has added up during the holidays enough to allow them to spend a week at the coast. They are very happy about that as you can imagine!
And now for the tough bit.
We have been asked to help a home for abandoned babies under 2 years old in Varna. As with all state run orphanages in Bulgaria, they are given a budget at the beginning of each year by the state to provide for the children and pay the staff and expenses. A budget which is always very far from what they really need. As the 200 babies at this home need 30,000 nappies a month the money doesn't last long. They certainly can't afford luxuries such as nappy rash cream or cholic water. For these simple things we take for granted they have asked our help. Ilia has previously found a manufacturer of diapers who is ready to sell us a ton of diapers (+- 15000) at bellow manufacturing cost (€1000) which would mean we can help the orphanage with 1000 euro per month.
And this is where you come into play...
Although sometimes it feels as though we are embarking on a mission impossible to help these kids, what we have achieved together is already changing the living conditions and hopefully future lives of some of Bulgaria's 22000 children in orphanages.

Пролетен привет, професионалисти,
След като културно и джазирано отбелязахме две-годишнината от инициативата "БГ Про" през март, счетохме, че е време да се върнем в сравнително нормален режим на сбирките ни и да ви предложим една априлско-първомайска среща на по чаша.
Пък и какъв по-професионален повод да се видим от Деня на труда, 1 май. Очертава се приятна, слънчева събота, а какво по-хубаво за завършека на такъв ден от среща с приятели и хубава музика. Още повече, че за приятното разпускане в този ден ще се "трудят" музикално и свежите симпатяги Явор и Константин от Jailhouse Chili, с които вече имахме възможността да се запознаем всички преди време и чиито музикални вкусове и способности за импровизация винаги оставят положителни впечатления. Български джаз-клуб в Брюксел
Привет на всички - колеги, приятели, в кратце професионалисти!
Позволяваме си да привлечем вниманието Ви в този петъчен следобед (под небе от вулканична пепел) към едно предложение за приятно прекарване на съботната вечер.
Един предприемчив български професионалист се свърза с мен преди време, за да сподели желанието си в заведението, което е реновирал наскоро, да организира редовни тематични музикални вечери, с приятен джаз акомпанимент. Аз приветствах идеята му и се ангажирах веднага щом задвижат нещата да Ви съобщим по най-бързия начин, защото не се и съмнявам ще се съгласите, че не върви културното ни присъствие в Брюксел да е само поп-фолк и народна музика. В смисъл нищо против музиките за сватби и погребения, но имаме и повече, както се казва.

Утре вечер - събота 17 април, около 21.00 часа в заведението Les 12 chaises ще има рецитал на българско джаз-дуо в състав:
Емануела - вокал и цигулка
Стенли – пиано.
Не се и съмнявам, че сред Вас има мнозина, които биха се потопили в един приятен, съботно разпускащ funk, cool, fusion джаз-експеримент, в изключителна проятната атмосфера, която нашият приятел Тихомир е създал в това заведение. Концертът ще бъде и своебразно откриване на заведението за Българската професонална общност в Брюксел, затова не се и съмнявам, че ще се видим там.
